Screen Door is my favorite Southern restaurant in Portland. They serve comfort food using local and organic produce and meat. We tend to order a bunch of side items and share them family style. Our favorites are the fried pork chops, macaroni & cheese, sweet potato fries, bacon & hock collard greens and buttery mashed potatoes with tasso gravy. And we always save room for dessert, my all-time favorite dessert is their ban-offee pie. There is always a wait so our secret is to arrive 15 minutes before opening in order to ensure we get a table (last week we got the last available table). But if you do find that you have to wait leave your number with the hostess and head over to Heart Coffee Roasters (which is a few doors down) to hang out.

Agreed: a bunch of shared side dishes is the way to go! The in-season organics supplemental menu is always outrageous, too. So many great options. While I happily wait for my table there, I often stare at the Screen Door sign, and those two Es look weirder and weirder as the wait goes on. Is there something wonky about them, or am I just always so hungry and excited for down-home cooking that I'm not seeing straight?

Great post.

KATIE // I love the in-season menu! We usually get a salad from the daily menu! :)

I was visiting Portland earlier this year, and was lucky enough to eat there--it was FANTASTIC!

Adding this to my list of restaurants to try the next time I come home. Love the new places I'm finding through your blog.
