THE TWELVE DAYS OF HOLIDAY PACKAGES NO.5

Package No.5 from The Twelve Days of Holiday Packages was inspired by my love of personalizing gifts and edible treats. There are many mediums you can use when creating personalized gift tags, such as paper, fabric, and clay, but why not use a sweet treat like a caramel? I don't know anyone who wouldn't love to receive a personalized letter gift tag made of candy.

For this letter gift tag I used a piece of caramel and a mini letter cookie cutter, but you can use any semi-hard chewy candy. Just make sure to have extra candies as somehow they tend to disappear while you are making the letter tags, or at least they do when I'm making them.

For this package I cut out the first letter of the recipient's name, but you could cut out all the letters to spell out a person's name.

MATERIALS

1. One piece of caramel (I love Morinaga Milk Caramel)

2. Rolling pin

3. Letter cookie cutter

4. Parchment paper

5. Needle

6. Thread

7. Scissors

8. Besotted Brand Muslin Bag

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place piece of parchment paper on a flat surface. Use rolling pin and flatten one piece of caramel until it is 0.25" thick.

2. Use letter cookie cutter to cut out the letter from the caramel.

3. Let the caramel letter air dry for a few hours until it is semi-hard.

4. Thread needle and double knot at end.

5. Insert needle through the inside of the muslin bag (at the spot where you want the letter tag to be), thread needle through the side of the letter and out the other side of the letter, and then back into the muslin bag. Double knot the end and clip thread tail with scissors.

TIPS

1. Try using taffy or dried fruit leather instead of a caramel.

2. If the candy is too hard to flatten put it in the microwave for a few seconds to make it more pliable.

3. If the caramel sticks to the cookie cutter use a Q-tip to gently release the caramel from the cookie cutter.
