[EAT] COMPOTE

{Photographs by Sally J Shim}

Compote Cafe & Bakery is a beautiful space in SE Portland serving local, organic and seasonal made-from-scratch food for breakfast and lunch. I went last week for brunch with my girlfriend and her daughter. When I arrived I was greeted by Shana (the owner) and since it was pretty quiet I was able to take a lot of photographs. I love the clean modern and vintage interior, it really is a beautiful well-lit space. A few of my favorite details in the restaurant is the glass water dispenser, little herb garden and the sign in the kids area (Children left unattended will be given an espresso and a puppy). I ordered the Poached Egg Stacks (poached egg + sauteed greens + shredded hash browns) and it was delicious. My friend had the Biscuits and Cream and Compote (Apricot) and her daughter had a yummy heart shaped scone. I love that Compote is kid-friendly and opens up to a large back patio area. I'm looking forward to returning soon.

[STYLE] MISS E // PORTLAND

It is no secret that I adore simple and classic clothing. And although I love picking out clothes for my boys there is something incredibly sweet about little girls clothing. I'm not a fan of princessy pink + frills + loud prints on girls but I favor simple stripes and sweet details. When I met up with my friend for brunch the other day her three year old daughter, Miss E, was so stylishly dressed I just had to take her picture. Miss E is starting preschool this year and was proudly sporting her cute little mouse backpack. I'm hoping to share more of Miss E's sweet style here in the months to come.

[EAT] OREGON ICE WORKS

{Photographs by Sally J Shim}

To celebrate the boys first day back at school we went out to dinner (Pok Pok, their choice) and grabbed some strawberry rhubarb ice across the street at Oregon Ice Works. Oregon Ice Works offers Oregon style Italian ice in a variety of flavors. The ice is refreshing and flavorful, perfect on a hot summer day. Although our days of sunshine are numbered here in the Pacific NW, have no fear because the owner of Oregon Ice Works told me that they'll be offering their ice in pints throughout the year.

[CELEBRATE] HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

{Photographs by Sally J Shim}

I surprised the boys after their first day of school with some goodies from Pearl Bakery. Their seasonal berry tarts are my favorite. I also love their chocolate chunk cookies and since j is a macaron fan I picked up a peach + ginger and pistachio macarons. J's all time favorite pastry is pain au chocolat so of course I had to grab one of those too! I made some simple food flags to decorate the baked goods. The boys were happy campers when they came home and saw these goodies on the kitchen table. They ate one sweet treat and then I packed another one in their lunch today.

[FAMILY] MR. THIRD & MR. FIRST

{Photograph by Sally J Shim}

The boys went back to school yesterday which is always a bittersweet day. As much as I love having them home with me during the summer I am also so excited to see them grow and thrive at school among their teachers and peers. The beginning of the school year energy is also contagious and is making me want to buckle down and work on some projects for work and just for fun!

[DESIGN] CHIHIRO TANAKA

{Chihiro Tanaka}

When Appah and I were in Tokyo a few years ago we came across the Light Couture exhibition by Chihiro Tanaka. I was mesmerized by the beautiful handmade lights with all the intricate folds. I love the idea of one of these beautiful light sculptures hanging in a room in our house.
