SALLY J SHIM X DANIEL WELLINGTON

I love how repackaging a gift with a few simple materials can create a visually appealing treat for the recipient. Although I think pretty packaging is not limited to a season or special occasion, I know many of you will start thinking about wrapping holiday gifts in the coming weeks. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing some simple packaging ideas, that will hopefully inspire you to think outside the box when it comes to gift wrapping.

While opening up a box provides an element of surprise to the recipient, I love using translucent vellum paper in my packaging projects. To reflect the minimal and clean aesthetic of this Daniel Wellington Classic Sheffield Lady watch in Rose Gold, I created a simple wood veneer gift tag, inspired by a project in my book, Pretty Packages. I attached the watch to a piece of kraft cardstock, using a punch and twine, and created a vellum sleeve that the watch slides into. I painted the corner of the wood veneer gift tag, using washi tape and acrylic paint, and added a letter sticker with the first initial of the recipient. Wrap the gift tag around the package with some twine and you are ready to give your friend or loved one a pretty little package.

The kind folks at Daniel Wellington are offering 15% off all watches to SALLYJSHIM readers. Just use the discount code "sallyjshim", valid until January 1, 2016.

BRIKA X SALLYJSHIM GIFT BOX COLLABORATION

I am thrilled to share with you a collaboration I have been working on with BRIKA and several of my favorite artisans. A few months ago I was approached by BRIKA to curate exclusive gift boxes inspired by my book, Pretty Packages. I had so much fun brainstorming ideas and focused on including products that were both beautiful and functional.

The WRAP IT UP gift box is perfect for someone who loves packaging unique and thoughtful gifts. The gift box includes an exclusive Dozi screenprinted furoshiki wrap in the beautiful (and best-selling) Scales pattern. The furoshiki wrap is 19"x19" and can be used to wrap small to medium sized boxes or odd-shaped gifts and also serves as a tea towel. The gift box also includes a set of exclusive Dozi gift tags (3 different designs, 24 total) in bright and festive colors. You will also find an exclusive Shapes & Colors Textiles' screenprinted zippered pouch in cobalt blue with a bright pink zipper. The pouch is a perfect alternative to a gift box or bag, just attach a gift tag to the zipper! And last, but not least, is a copy of Pretty Packages.

The PRETTY PAPER & PACKAGES gift box is perfect for all you paper and packaging lovers! It includes an exclusive Ampersandity hand-lettered "thank you" stamp, perfect for making handmade cards, gift tags or wrapping paper. It also includes a set of exclusive Ampersandity hand-lettered gift tags in two different designs (I think a gift wrapped with kraft paper and topped with one of these gift tags is simple and pretty packaging at its finest). You will also find a set of beautiful packaging inspired cards by Good on Paper. I was so amazed at how the design was inspired by the cover of Pretty Packages. And again, last but not least, is a copy of Pretty Packages.

PACKAGE 027

Kraft paper and twill tape are one of my favorite packaging combinations. The other day I found some cute polka dot kraft paper and thought it would be perfect to wrap up a little thank you gift. I wrapped the bottom box but the top two boxes did not have square corners to I adhered them together with tape adhesive and wrapped a band of paper around the box instead of fussing with the tricky corners. I then tied white twill tape around the gifts and and added a little thank you label.

If you don't have any polka dot kraft paper in your stash you can always go the DIY route and make your own by stamping on dots or adding dotty stickers.

MY BOOK! PRETTY PACKAGES: 45 CREATIVE GIFT-WRAPPING PROJECTS...COMING SEPTEMBER 2014!

Hi Friends! I’ve been keeping a BIG secret from you and today is the day I finally get to reveal the big secret! I am feeling nervous, anxious, and excited right now and it feels quite surreal that I am able to share this big news with you! I wrote a BOOK! It is titled Pretty Packages: 45 Creative Gift-Wrapping Projects and is being published by Chronicle Books, one of my favorite publishers. Below is the cover of Pretty Packages, which showcases some of the 45 packaging projects that you’ll find inside the book.

Pretty Packages contains 45 step-by-step gift-wrapping and packaging projects perfect for beginner and advanced crafters. The book walks you through how to turn a simple package into a creative and personalized gift that the recipient will be excited to receive. The projects in the book will not only inspire you to create pretty packages for gift giving, but will also give you ideas about packaging party and wedding favors as well as branding for your business.

Pretty Packages is divided into three sections: 1) Wrapping Paper, 2) Gift Boxes, Bags, & Toppers and 3) Gift Tags & Ribbon. The book also covers essential materials and tools needed to create your own pretty packages as well as various gift-wrapping and ribbon tying techniques. Each project includes two “bright ideas”-- variations to further customize your package.

In my experience teaching Packaging 101 workshops in Portland with my dear friend and fellow designer Joke Vande Gaer and creativity workshops here in Busan, I know there are many people out there who want to be creative but don’t think they have the “know how” or skills to do so. I truly believe everyone is creative and that you just need to tap into and cultivate your creativity. And I think packaging projects are a great way to jumpstart your creativity. I really wanted to create a book that was accessible for all types of crafters, from the beginner to the advanced, and I think I have achieved that with Pretty Packages.

This book has been a labor of love and I’m excited to be able to share more details about the book and the book writing process in future blog posts. Over the next several months I will share how I came to write a book, what it was like writing a book in Busan while my publisher is in San Francisco, and other fun behind-the-scenes stories.

The book will officially be released in September, but you can pre-order now at:

+ Amazon

+ Powells

+ Barnes & Noble

+ Books-A-Million

I feel fortunate some of my favorite design, craft, and lifestyle bloggers like Joy Cho of Oh Joy!, Jordan Stanley of Oh Happy Day, and Erin Loechner of Clementine Daily have written kind words about Pretty Packages. I think Pretty Packages will be a wonderful book to add to your own personal library and it would also make a fantastic gift for a friend (and will arrive plenty of time before the holiday gift wrapping season).

I'm looking forward to sharing more about Pretty Packages in the weeks and months to come!

[WRAP] PACKAGE 026

It is birthday season at Casa Shim and we also have quite a few friends who share April birthdays. Here is a simple birthday package for a sweet little three-year old. Kraft paper always creates the perfect base for a package. Add a simple and colorful Happy Birthday label along with three stripes of washi tape and you are good to go!

THE TWELVE DAYS OF HOLIDAY PACKAGES / REVIEW

I had so much fun creating packages for The Twelve Days of Holiday Packages (see all the packaging projects here). There are many packages that did not make the final featured twelve packages, but I'm looking forward to sharing them with you through my WRAP series. My design aesthetic is quite minimalistic in nature, so if you like a little more glitz and glam I think these packaging projects provide a nice base for more dressed up packages. I also wanted to feature projects that could be created not only for the holidays, but year-round. Take away the holiday gift tags, gift bands, and gift labels, and you can easily use any of these ideas for birthday gifts, party/wedding favors, or part of the branding for your business.

Thank you to everyone who tweeted, pinned, and posted about The Twelve Days of Holiday Packages

Happy Packaging!
