[READ] IT IS NICE TO BE DIFFERENT

{Photographs by Sally J Shim}     {Illustrations by Fuse Yasuko}

It is nice to be different is a sweet children's book written and illustrated by Fuse Yasuko. I bought the Korean/English translated version a few years ago when we were living in Korea. The story is about a friendship between a circle and triangle and how through a little adventure together they learn to appreciate their differences. I love that the book is written in Korean and English [great for adults/kids learning to reading Korean]. And I adore the simple and sweet illustrations [how cute are the circle and triangle eating pizza together?].

[MAKE] IPAD SLEEVE v. 2.0

{Photographs by Sally J Shim}

I always have the itch to sew something before I leave on vacation. I originally wanted to finish up a few dresses but I settled on a new iPad sleeve. My old iPad sleeve has been put to good use and I thought it would be fun to make a new one out of the grey industrial felt I ordered from Filz Felt. Since I've been crushing on neon this year I thought pink neon thread would be perfect against the grey. The iPad sleeve v. 2.0 design is very similar to the first version. I didn't have any buttons in my stash to go with the new sleeve so I made a fabric button. [To make the button I stitched lines on to grey cotton fabric and used a little button kit to make it into a fabric button. Fabric buttons are super easy + fun to make!] Now that I'm back from vacation it is time to finish up those dresses!

[DESIGN] I HEART PIES

{I Heart Pies}

There's nothing like a well designed logo + branding that catches my attention. Last weekend I went to Unique LA with my sister's family [my brother in law is a graphic designer and he wanted to check it out] and I immediately noticed the sweet octopus logo of I Heart Pies. I love the cheery color palette and cute illustrations. Unfortunately my belly was full of grilled cheese sandwiches + mac & cheese and since we were going to be out and about LA the rest of the day [with no cooler handy] I had to pass on the pies [gasp!]. Next time I'm in LA I'm must order one!

[TRAVEL] CALIFORNIA JULY 2011

{Photograph by Sally J Shim}

The boys and I are back from our trip to California. We had so much fun spending time with family and meeting up with old and new friends. I enjoyed our time with my sister and her family [my youngest niece is one years old and in that adorable phase!!] and the boys loved playing with their cousins and didn't want to leave my parent's home where they were swimming and eating all day. But of course as soon as we landed in Portland they were literally running to meet Appah.

Some highlights from the trip:

1. Long talks with my sister. So much better than talking on the phone!

2. Watching the boys play with their cousins. [The boys rank swimming in my parent's pool as their favorite!]

3. Going on a few food tours with Bonnie and Miss V [Gjelina Take Away, Broome St. General, LAMILL, Bottega Louie, Proof Bakery, Joan's on Third, Simplethings Sandwich & Pie Shop].

4. Spending time with Carrie and her sweet boys at the beach in Malibu.

5. Going on a walking tour of Venice with B & V & Audrey & her cute boys [and visiting her lovely shop, Urbanic].

6. Yummy dinner at the Palihouse Courtyard Brasserie with Peggy.

7. Meeting up with old college friends in K-town. And eating yummy Korean pork bbq + pahtbingsoo!

8. Dinner at Comme Ça with some amazing + talented women [Jane, Chelsea, Amy, Peggy + Allison].

9. Spending time with the lovely Elizabeth.

10. Meeting Anne of Hello Hanna at Unique LA

11. Being able to slow down and enjoy the summer with my boys!

Happy August, Friends!

[EAT] LITTLE BIG BURGER

{Photographs by Sally J Shim}

Little Big Burger is one of our favorite spots to take the boys when we're in the mood for a burger and fries [which for me is more often then I care to admit]. I can't claim that the burgers are the best in town but they are good. The truffle fries are my favorite--always crispy and fresh [which is very important in my book]. I used to take the boys to the original Pearl District location which is closer to our home but I'm really loving the new Mississippi location which has more space and outdoor seating [not to mention yummy shops nearby like Ruby Jewel and The Meadow]. And good news for folks in Eugene, Oregon and Los Altos, California there will be a LBB in your city soon!
